14 July 2011 Starting up a Disabled Students Society at University
Hi everyone, I wondered if you could help me?
As some of you may already know I am currently studying at Uni up in Aberdeen. I have just completed my first year and despite enjoying the independence and freedom I found myself becoming increasing depressed, isolated and frustrated at the lack of help and support available to me regarding social living. As a result of this I have come up with the idea of setting up a society for disabled students throughout Aberdeen via my university union, the only problem is that's all it is at present, an idea. You see in order for this society to become a reality I need to be able to make my ideas more concrete so as to attract potential members and gain funding. At the moment my idea consist of the following:
A group of young disabled people who meet up on a regular bases to discuss and share ideas, advice and improve fercilities around the university and potentially the city of Aberdeen, furthermore I would like this society to not just be about focusing on the issues and the negative side associated with disability but also to provide its members with a change to meet others in a similar situation to themselves, have fun and possibility go on trips as a group. Moreover I am thinking that it would be a good change to involve able-bodied students and help them discover a less stigmatized/different view of disability, the only problem is that I don't know where to start and how to go about it. To add to the pressure I have to get everything together and finalized by September so as to present a fully functioning society at the freshers fair as part of freshers week, ready for the new first years.
Any advice, help and ideas would be most welcome, cheers,
Laura :-)

Hi Laura
It was great to meet you yesterday and thanks for blogging. Let's hope there are some ideas out there. Als, why not add an image to this blog. Any digital photo on unis would work!

Have you thought about talking to the University's Disability Officer? They may be able to contact other disabled students on your behalf and garner some interest. They also might be able to provide you with some pointers on raising funds for the society.
